Timbers

At Beaches Timber we offer our products in a variety of local timber species, so you can choose the right timber for your job. Commonly stocked timbers include Spotted Gum, Blue Gum, Blackbutt, Ironbark and more.

Spotted Gum

What it looks like

The colour can vary depending on the position of the tree in the forest. It can vary from light brown to reddish brown. It is coarse and uneven which means you can get some beautifully wavy grain

What it’s good for

It is often used in the structural components of a building, including flooring, framing, railway sleepers and wharf pylons

Where it’s from

Australia

Properties

It is durable and strong. It is also beautiful in its spotted texture

Sydney Blue Gum

What it looks like

Despite the name, it can come in a range of colours from pink to reddish brown. The grain is usually pretty straight, and it can be interspersed with gum veins

What it’s good for

It is a great construction timber; flooring, sleepers, cladding, panelling, even boat building

Where it’s from

Ironically, it is found as far north as southern Queensland

Properties

It is an easy timber. It responds well to working, dressing and fixing. It also comes up nicely with most polishes

Blackbutt

What it looks like

It can have anything from a golden yellow to a pale brown colour. The texture is generally even and straight

What it’s good for

Its predictable appearance makes it a good choice for indoor work like panelling or flooring. That said, it is also a great choice for the more structural elements of a building

Where it’s from

New South Wales

Properties

It has a tendency to surface check, so special care needs
to be taken in the drying. It doesn’t respond as well to painting as other timbers

Ironbark

What it looks like

This depends on the species. It can be a deep red with a fin even texture and an interlocked grain. Alternatively, it can be white

What it’s good for

It has historically been used for the heavy lifting in structures. It is useful as poles, piles, sleepers, flooring, decking, bridge work, fencing, carriages and wagons, and house framing

Where it’s from

New South Wales

Properties

It endures the elements beautifully. Whatever mother nature throws its way, Ironbark can withstand

Exotics

Occasionally, we will come across some more exotic species of timber, such as Himalayan, Cedar, Camphor Laurel and Norfolk Island pine.

We will generally cut into slabs. Specifics about each of these timbers is available on request and depending on availability.
